Swimming Against the Tide (Summary)

Swimming Against the Tide (Summary)

Preacher: Pastor Tunde Jenrola

The theme for this year’s evangelism weekend is Repositioned for Evangelism and our text is taken from Acts 8: 5 – 8. Our main responsibility as a child of God is to go and win souls. 2nd Corinthians 5: 19.

Some of the reasons why we must win souls:

  • God loves the world, John 3: 16
  • Wickedness is on the increase, Isaiah 60: 2
  • There is no repentance in hell, there is no repentance after the last breath,
  • Time is short, John 15: 16.

Swimming against the tide, our Bible text is Genesis 41: 14 – 34. We all know what swimming is; tide is a current in the sea that is caused by the regular and continuous movement of the sea waves. It goes up and down, then you say you have a tide in the sea. To swim against the tide therefore could be another way of saying to not follow everyone else.

So bringing it to our message, to swim against the tide comes in two ways: it may mean what every other person is doing, you don’t want to do because it is not necessarily the right way everybody else is going; secondly, it could be that there are difficult times, but to survive, you need to come against the tide so that the difficult times does not wash you away and that’s more like what we are going to talk about this morning.

Some few lessons to take from it:

  • The economies of the world are cyclical, Genesis 26: 1.
  • No famine, no economic disaster will last forever, 2nd Kings 7.
  • People respond to famine, to difficult times, to economic challenges differently, let’s keep getting at doing something, Genesis 26.
  • The impact of famine on people differ, Genesis 26.
  • It does not matter how bad any economy is, God has a solution.

What are the things that we are supposed to do?

  • Make effort to improve your lot or make effort to survive this situation.
  • Make the best use of the time that we have.
  • Try to expand your sources of income.
  • We must maintain good discipline.
  • Avoid taking nick-check decisions.
  • Don’t be wasteful, Genesis 41: 53 – 54.
  • Delay gratification.
  • Avoid borrowing where it is not necessary.
  • Protect what you have.
  • Keep your ears to the ground.
  • Seek professional advice.
  • Stay out of trouble.
  • Obey the rules of the land.
  • Help those who are in need.
  • Trust God for divine direction.

Thank You Jesus,

Salvation Prayers

If you don’t Know Jesus as your personal Lord and Saviour and would like to accept him into your life as your personal Lord and Saviour, Please say this prayer:

Father, I know that I have broken your laws and my sins have separated me from You. I am truly sorry, and now I want to turn away from my past sinful life toward You. Please forgive me, and help me avoid sinning again. I believe that Your son, Jesus Christ died for my sins, was resurrected from the dead, is alive, and hears my prayer. I invite Jesus to become the Lord of my life, to rule and reign in my heart from this day forward. Please send Your Holy Spirit to help me obey You, and to do Your Will for the rest of my life. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
